Geeky Vacation Destinations for Your Bucket List

A quick review of the latest film box-office champs will reveal a lot of superhero movies in the top 10. This proves that stories that were once considered “geek culture” have gone mainstream. It is now considered cool to embrace all things in the genre, ranging from comic books to sci-fi and anime. The question then becomes where does a card-carrying geek go on vacation? As the fates would have it, there are plenty of destinations for your geeky travel bucket list.

San Diego Comic-Con, California

Going to the San Diego Comic-Con is the kind of trek every geek in good standing should make at least once in their lives. Back in the day, this was a gathering of like-minded folks who talked, sold and swapped comic books. Today, the San Diego Comic-Con has morphed into a must-visit destination for television and movie studios that are hoping to generate buzz for their upcoming projects. There are also exclusive collectibles to fetch throughout the massive vendor hall.

Nordic Fest, Iowa

If you are a lover of all things Vikings, then make your way over to Iowa for their annual Nordic Fest. This festival celebrates Scandinavian heritage, culture, and food with a three-day event that boasts over 10,000 visitors each year. Compete in sporting events to be the next Ultimate Norseman or settle in at the Skjaldborg Viking Encampment for a full Viking combat demonstration. If you’re interested in enjoying more cultural experiences from countries outside the U.S., then make it a road trip and explore Cedar Rapids and their famed National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library.

Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, California

Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm means that the galaxies of "Star Wars" are now part of the “Mouse House.” Along with the new films and TV series, it was inevitable that there would be additions to the theme parks. After years of development and building, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge just opened up on May 31st, 2019, and geeks from around the world are flocking to this destination. This is an immersive experience that allows visitors to imagine that they are visiting a spaceport where the full-sized replica of the Millennium Falcon is parked and ready for tours. You don’t need much more inspiration than that to plan a trip.

Madame Tussauds, New York

When she first started crafted wax figures, Madame Tussaud was making death masks for the rich and famous. That soon evolved into crafting life-size sculptures of famous figures from history. It was 1835 when Marie Tussaud opened her first museum in London. Today, there are over 20 Madame Tussauds museums across the globe. The New York City Madame Tussauds is the ultimate stop for taking a selfie with the next-best-thing to your favorite movie star.

Middle Earth Film Sets, New Zealand

Fans of the "Lord of the Rings" film series marveled at the scenic locations that brought Tolkien’s Middle Earth to life. All of the films were shot on location and in studios in New Zealand. Visitors can take a trip to Hobbiton and walk the trails of elves, dwarves, and hobbits. It will become your new happy place.

Warner Bros. Studios, England

The Warner Bros. Studios in London is where magic was literally made. This is where the popular Harry Potter films were shot. After most film productions, the sets are dismantled and put into storage. Here, those sets, costumes, and props have been preserved to allow visitors to walk through Hogwarts Academy and Diagon Alley. Muggle or wizard, you are sure to love a visit to this studio.

Clearly, there are plenty of spots around the globe for geeks to plan a visit. The real problem is how to pick just one! Begin planning your next vacation today with a tour package from Holiday Tours
